CO’s Governor Polis Proclamation for May 2022: Lyme & TBD Awareness Month!
Colorado Governor, Jared Polis, proclaims Lyme and Other Tick-Borne Diseases/Conditions Awareness Month for the month of May, 2022!
In this continuing era of COVID-19, prevention and recognition of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases/conditions is even more critical.
As the distribution and prevalence of ticks and tick-borne diseases continues to increase at a national level…so must awareness!
Though Colorado is considered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment(CDPHE) as a “low or no incidence” state for several TBDs, we are unfortunately home to a growing number of people and pets that have been infected by Lyme and/or other tick-borne diseases and conditions.
Patients have been infected with tick-borne pathogens from here in Colorado, as well as through exposures during travel throughout the United States and the world.
People, pets, livestock and wildlife can all be hosts to pathogens that cause infections acquired through the bite of a tick. The sooner a tick-borne disease is diagnosed and properly treated, the better the outcome for the patient.
COVID-19 may complicate symptoms, diagnosis and access to care to an even greater extent, therefore awareness of diseases needs to increase faster than the spread of the diseases.
A growing number of patients young and old are living with debilitating symptoms and chronic disease, including children that may be infected congenitally.
Thank you Governor Polis for granting this Proclamation for greater awareness of Lyme & Other TBDs and Conditions throughout the month of May!
